It is said that great leadership begins with connecting and communicating effectively with different kinds of people. And in Paul J. Meyer’s words “communication- the human connection- is a key to personal and career success,” the same can be said in building a new Nigeria, as one must take it as a personal project as well as a collective project.
In part one of The Steps towards a new Nigeria, we talked about communicating the prophecy and vision, writing it, and keeping it in our hearts as God expected, so that whosoever that read it can run with it.
This will lead us to Personal self-development as this is the first step we must take as individuals to prepare ourselves to be the leader that will bring about the building of a new Nigeria. We must be able to Lead ourselves as well as make good choices, as we recall that this is the foundation of effective leadership.
All successful leaders have to lead their people to work hard at self-development, knowing their strengths and weaknesses, examining and understanding their temperament, and energy levels, but more than that they also knew the kind of people they work well with and those they try hard to couple with especially in a team. This is what we call self-evaluation.
Aspiring effective leaders should determine what they stand for, their values, principles, and conviction; their values determine who they follow, and accept into their lives and those following them. In doing this, aspiring leaders can cultivate skills to would aid the leadership process. Such skills are Communication skills; as good communication is a core leadership function because effective communication and effective leadership are closely intertwined. Communication is more than sending and receiving information, as a leader communication involves thinking with clarity, expressing ideas whether in writing, conversing, presenting, and handling the rapid flow of information with a multitude of audiences. But what are the critical tips to communicate more effectively?
- Set clear expectations
- Listening is a powerful skill
- Visibility is a form of communication
- Authenticity is key
- Simplicity is great for illustration.
Communication is a must for leaders as ineffective communication can derail their efforts resulting in high-stress situations when expectations and deadlines are not met.
